Third grade is a most exciting year!  It is a time of tremendous academic growth as well as emotional development.  It is a bridge between using primary skills and understanding the beginnings of the critical thinking process.  Third grade promotes a combination of tactile learning, group effort, and independent work.

We open the year with a unit on Friendship skills, which covers feelings about new beginnings and developing healthy interactions and relationships, as well as conflict resolution (Health).  Our theme units cover national symbols, holiday customs around the world, general economics, mapping and geography, regional history, insect and spider study (life science), meteorology (earth science), and motion (physical science).

We use the Treasures reading program published by MacMillan/McGraw-Hill.  Third grade begins the process of increasing comprehension of material that is read.  We will be learning about literary elements and story structure, doing character analysis, making inferences, and studying common fundamentals of the reading and writing connection.

Our math program is a combination of hands-on learning and traditional facts.  We cover geometry, measurement, probability/statistics, computation, number sense, algebraic relationships, and problem solving.  I have a personal connection with math teaching and strive to make this subject fun and accessible to all students in my class.

Third grade is a pivotal year in the lives of youngsters.  My hope is that each student grows in confidence and ability throughout our time together.  It is an exciting journey.  Come join me!
