Fluency

What is Fluency?

Automaticity is reading words with no noticeable cognitive or mental effort. It is having mastered word recognition skills to the point of over learning. Fundamental skills are so "automatic" that they do not require conscious attention.

Fluency is not an end in itself but a critical pathway to comprehension. Fluent reading frees resources to process meaning.

What is Vocabulary?

Definition: As a learner begins to read, reading vocabulary is mapped onto the oral vocabulary the learner brings to the task.

Expressive Vocabulary: Requires a speaker or writer to produce a specific label for a particular meaning.

Receptive Vocabulary: Requires a reader to associate a specific meaning with a given label as in reading or listening.
