Special
Education
If you are concerned about your child’s educational
progress, skill acquisition or social skill development, exploring
learning
difficulties may be worth your time. Though every effort is made
to improve student performance through regular education interventions
and supports prior to considering special education or related
services,
this team will help guide those efforts to ensure an appropriate
education for all.
If you have
questions or concerns about any of the programs listed above please
contact the Learning Specialist assigned to your child.

Corrective
Learning Programs
Corrective Reading/Comprehension
Hazelbrook Middle School offers students the opportunity to improve
their skills in basic reading and comprehension. Through teacher
recommendation, parent request, and/or past test scores, students
will be placed in one of five different levels.
Utilizing a
direct instruction teaching approach, students will be taught to
mastery in specific skill areas proven to be essential for reading
and comprehension. Students will move quickly through units of instruction
that focus on the reading components necessary for the successful
comprehension of high-content
reading material.
Students previously
enrolled in this class have also enjoyed increased test scores on
the statewide achievement exams taken in the spring. By becoming
successful at skimming, analyzing written work, and using logic
to draw conclusions, they are able to complete these tests much
faster and with less anxiety.
Corrective Mathematics
Much like the Corrective Reading Program, Hazelbrook Middle School
offers an opportunity for students to improve their basic mathematical
operation skills. Students are selected for this class based on
teacher recommendation, parent request and/or past test scores.
Students enrolled
in this class will move quickly through units of instruction that
focus on the essential components necessary for future mathematical
challenges. Students will practice math facts, learn strategies
to solve multi-digit problems, understand and manipulate fractions
as well as think critically about ratios, percents, and complex
equations.

Success
Program
We know learners will excel and thrive if they are provided with
a safe environment focused on high academic achievement and personal
growth. However, for students who demonstrate difficulty maintaining
sufficient progress (academically and/or behaviorally) and have
demonstrated the need for additional support and care, Hazelbrook
Middle School offers Success. Success is intended to maximize the
role of the educator in order to build positive relationships between
students, peers, and adults.
With
the focus on learning strategies, self-determination, and skill
application,
Hazelbrook’s Success class will help enrolled students experience
success.
Students enrolled
in Success will have the opportunity to benefit from:
- Instructional
support through a licensed teacher and a student advocate
- Instructional
and behavioral goal setting and tracking
- Direct instruction
in learning strategies and social skills
- Small group
attention
- Self-monitoring
and discussion; and
- A continuing
focus on character development
If
you would like more information about Hazelbrook’s Success
program, contact the Counseling Office at 503.431.5100
or the instructor, Chris Long at 503.431.5104 or

Talented
and Gifted
Hazelbrook
Middle School is committed to an educational program that recognizes,
identifies and serves the unique needs of all students, including
the talented and gifted (TAG). Our district believes that there
are many
areas in which students may be gifted and we strive to meet their
needs in both core academic classes and elective classes. The
Tigard-Tualatin
School District identifies students who are academically talented
in math and/or reading and the intellectually gifted.
While
TAG students are identified and special services provided, it is
the intent of the district to group students in a heterogeneous
environment as much as possible. It shall continue to be the intent
of the district to minimize the labeling of students by ability
and maximize the understanding and cooperation that results from
heterogeneous grouping.
Students
will arrive at Hazelbrook with their TAG designation intact
and
continue throughout their time here as TAG students. Students will
be added to the program as test scores and their performance
merit.
We practice flexible grouping in our pullouts, meaning that TAG
and high performing students will be included depending on
the activity
and teacher recommendation. Please access
the HMS
TAG Page for
information and helpful links. Contact Amy Haaland, the Hazelbrook
TAG Coordinator at 503.431.5123 or
by email at ahaaland@ttsd.k12.or.us.

English
Language Learners
ELL
(English Language Learner) Class is designed to help all students
who do not speak English on a native level. Within this description
are found various categories of students:
- those
who do not speak English
- those
who speak and write a little
- those
who speak well, but write and read at a basic level
- those
who speak, write, and read very well, but need to perfect grammar
This
class deals with all levels, and in most classes, students
of different levels are found. For this reason, we try to design
lessons to help each
one of our students as much as possible. For more information about the
ELL program contact Jennie Movrich at 503.431.5147 or jmovrich@ttsd.k12.or.us
