Physical Education

Of all subject areas taught in school, Physical Education is the only subject which, by the very nature of its content, has the potential to affect how a person will feel every moment of every day for the rest of his or her life. ~Allen Russell

The philosophy of the Mary Woodward Elementary School Physical Education Program encourages students to strive to:

  • Understand and value physical activity and its contribution toward a healthy lifestyle.
  • Make informed healthy choices that positively affect the health, safety, and well-being of themselves and others.
  • Learn the skills necessary to perform a variety of physical activities.
  • Improve and maintain physical fitness.
  • Demonstrate responsible personal, social behavior and respect differences among people - Something we call "Sportsmanship."

Curriculum: There are several activities offered during the year to allow students the opportunity to to play different games and sports. These activities strive to provide the students with a rewarding experience regardless of the outcome of the games.

Each day learning experiences may focus on eye-hand coordination, eye-foot coordination, locomotor patterns or personal fitness. These learning experiences provide the students with great opportunities to explore and expand on his or her personal knowledge within the aforementioned areas.

Students will also work on skills and concepts such as: effort, teamwork, cooperation, sportsmanship, responsibility, taking turns, sharing, honesty, being helpful to others, and how to provide supportive encouragement to other student's effort.

Our students continue to increase their knowledge of the body system by learning a bone or muscle each week.

Lunch-Time Sports - The students are encouraged to participate in a variety of activities during their lunch recess. These activities allow the students to practice their sport skills, cooperate with each other, play by the rules, demonstrate sportsmanship, take responsibility for themselves, and have FUN!!! Some of the favorite activities are: football, soccer, kickball, basketball, 4 square, tetherball and wallball.

After school children are encoured to "Keep Moving". This is an afterschool exercise log, promoting lifetime health and fitness.
