Metzger Families—

This is an excerpt from an email sent from Mr. Risher who is our PE teacher and afterschool Chess Coach.

Yesterday we had a very cool moment for our school and our kids.  The Chess Team played in the Chess for Success Regional Championships yesterday and placed 2nd!  We missed out on 1st by a half point (equivalent to one tied match) Only the top 2 teams get to advance to the State Championships so this is a huge honor and an extremely difficult task.  We had 10 players that competed with a few extra kids that showed up and played in a side tournament for fun.  The team will be competing in the State Finals, March 2nd at the Oregon Convention Center.

Congratulations Mr. Risher and our Metzger Chess Team!  We will be cheering for you on March 2nd as you represent our school at the State Finals.

PASS Team  (Partnership for Academically Successful Students)

Metzger’s PASS team has begun meeting.  PASS seeks to engage and empower families and communities of color to ensure that all of our students reach their fullest potential.  This group of Metzger parents meets regularly to help the school better address the needs of our children of color.  They plan school activities, advise the school on how to better support our parents of color and help keep the school focused on closing the racial achievement gap.  PASS will also be a major organizer of this year’s Multi-Cultural celebration.

We will have a few meetings at Metzger and then join other school PASS teams from our district for three other meetings throughout the year.

A Few Important Tips for Parents

  • When visiting Metzger, Parents and visitors must sign in at the main office and receive a visitor’s badge. Volunteers are asked to sign in and log onto the computer for volunteer hours. Volunteers must also wear a badge for identification.
  • School begins at 8:20 and the children should be in their seats and ready to learn at that time. Students arriving after 8:20 must sign in at the office and take a late pass to class.  Please make every effort to get to school on-time as late arrivals are difficult both for the child and the classroom.
  • Students wait in the cafeteria or gym for a short time after buses and parents drop off in the AM. They are released by grade level at 8:10 when classrooms open. Children should not arrive at school before 8:00, as adult supervision is not available until 8:00.
  • Any changes in afterschool transportation need to be made in writing and sent with the student.  To ensure student safety, we can longer take these changes over the phone.  Please avoid picking up students in the office after 2:00 unless it is an emergency.
  • Pets are not allowed on school grounds.  We have students who are severely allergic to pets.  If you are walking a dog to school, it must be leashed and you should arrange to meet your child on the sidewalk near the parent drop-off..
  • The Main Office is open 7:45-3:45, Monday - Friday. 503-431-4600

Please call the Attendance Line if your child will be absent or late to school. The automated phone system will call if we have not heard from you by 9:30 AM. However, we want to know first thing if your child is not at school. We need to know that he/she is safe at home with you!  The attendance line is 503-431-4620.

                               Vision Statement

The mission of the staff at Metzger is to ensure that every child reach his or her potential. To accomplish this goal, each teacher will implement effective teaching practices to make every student successful in school. We believe in two very important concepts:

  • Every child can learn
  • Education decisions should be based on what is best for students

The major focus at Metzger will be on academic success. Recognizing that behavior, social and emotional issues contribute to a child's ability to perform in class; programs will be designed to promote success in those areas as well.
