Time To Teach

A Message from the Principal

Greetings to all new and returning Templeton Elementary students and parents. We are so glad to have you here at Templeton and look forward to another year of growth and learning.
A component of our positive school wide behavior program is called Time To Teach! Our staff has had multiple trainings around classroom management, systems and positive supports. Based on the extensive training to implement this program, we are very excited for the positive effects it continues to have on our school community.

The Time To Teach program involves teaching expected behaviors to students, rewarding those who choose appropriate behaviors (with our Positive School Climate or ROARS program) and holding those accountable who misbehave. Children who misbehave and/or need to “get back on track” will be asked to REFOCUS. When a child is asked to REFOCUS he/she will be seated in a quiet area, (in another teacher’s classroom) and asked to think about his/her inappropriate behavior and asked to come up with a positive alternative. The students will write this out on a REFOCUS form and/or picture form for kindergarten and 1st grade. If your child has had to REFOCUS, it means that they are trying to identify those behaviors which were beginning to affect their academic performance.

If a student has to fill out three or more REFOCUS forms for minor behaviors, that go beyond what we call “pesky” in one week, he/she will be assigned to an afterschool Expectations Class which will be held every Monday from 2:30pm to 3:30pm. Parents will be notified by phone if your child needs to attend this afterschool class. The Expectations Class will be supervised by one of our staff members each week. PARENTS OR GUARDIANS MUST COME AND PICK UP THEIR CHILD FROM THIS CLASS. STUDENTS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO WALK HOME FROM THE EXPECTATIONS CLASS. This will be difficult for working families, but it is a matter of safety as well as a show of support for the behaviors expected at Templeton. When you support this follow through, it has shown to dramatically reduce your student repeating the same behaviors as they understand that home and school are working together.

By intervening quickly, we will increase the students’ opportunity for academic growth within a positive and safe environment for all. We are also helping students become responsible citizens while promoting independent thinking skills.

More information about Time To Teach and our Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS) systems will be highlighted in some of our newsletters throughout the year. Please don’t hesitate to call if you have any questions or concerns about this program.
