Kindergarten
What do we learn in kindergarten?
Kindergarten is the place for both social and academic growth. Children learn how to become responsible students by taking care of their own supplies, handing in their reading homework weekly, cooperating in small groups, and participating during carpet time.
Throughout the course of the year, kindergarten students learn so much. In the fall, the emphasis is on social development skills and introducing new academic concepts. By spring, students are learning sight words, writing sentences, reading predecodables weekly, and learning how to spell new three-letter words. By the end of the school year, students will have completed ten calendars, learned how to count by 2's, 5's, 10's, and ones, and begun simple addition and subtraction equations with manipulatives (math games). In addition, students will have learned the necessary social skills for making friends, working cooperatively in a group, and working independently; all necessary skills for first grade.
