Welcome to Art Literacy
Who are we studying?
Berthe Morisot
1841-1895
Berthe Morisot was one of the first impressionist painters, an innovative group of artists who painted outside and were interested in showing the quality of light and atmosphere. Morisot had a free and easy style, putting the paint on the canvas so you could see the different brush strokes and colors rather than focusing on the details in her painting. With this method she created shimmering surfaces of color harmonies. In her lifetime Berthe Morsiot and the other impressionists work was not commercially successful. However, their ground-breaking approach to painting opened up many new ideas for twentieth century artists.
PROJECT: Students used acrylic paint and a “palette” knife (aka: craft stick) to paint an “Impressionist” picture of a still-life (a fruit). First they sketched their drawing, then added a horizontal line so their fruit did not appear to be “floating” in the air. They painted their fruit first, then added complementary colors to the background.
