2010 Western International Band Clinic Honors Band
The Western International Band Clinic is a convention for directors and students. Founded in 1979, WIBC features four 160-member high school honor bands under 6 world-renowned guest conductors and a soloist. Held in Seattle, Washington on November 19 - 22, 2010. Students are selected through an audition process.Congratulations to this year's honor band:

About Our Program
Oregon State Orchestra Championships in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2008, and 2009; and performed at state in both 2003 and 2008. The Tualatin Wind Ensemble has received state-qualifying scores at adjudicated festivals every year since 2005. In 2009, the Tualatin High School Wind Ensemble won the Pacific Conference Band Festival and went on to perform at the Oregon State Band Championships. The Tualatin High School Marching Band placed third in Open Class in the Portland Rose Festival Starlight Parade in 2007, and third in Class A in both 2009 and 2010. In 2007, the Tualatin High School Instrumental Music Department travelled to the bay area to perform in the San Francisco Heritage Festival. At the festival, Tualatin's Wind Ensemble placed second in their division, while their Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble both won their respective divisions. Tualatin High School also received the Sweepstakes Award for the most outstanding instrumental program at the festival. In 2010, the Tualatin Instrumental Music Department returned to San Francisco. This time, both Wind Ensemble and Orchestra placed second in their divisions, and Orchestra received the Adjudicator's Award for earning scores of 92 or above from all three judges. Since 2002, 40 members of the Tualatin High School Band & Orchestra Program have performed at the State Solo Contest; 105 have performed in the Western International Band Clinic Honor Bands; 9 have performed in the All-Northwest Band, Orchestra, or Jazz Band; 22 have performed in the All-State Band, Orchestra, or Jazz Band; 39 have performed in the Pacific Lutheran University Northwest Honor Bands; 31 have performed in the Music in May Honor Band or Orchestra; one has performed in the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra, and one has performed in the Pacific Honours Ensemble Program in Brisbane, Australia.
Solo & Ensemble Contest
38 Tualatin High School instrumental music students performed at the 2010 OMEA District 14 Solo & Ensemble Contest held at Newberg High School on Saturday, March 6. Every Tualatin student who participated received either a Superior or Excellent rating. Course Descriptions
Wind Ensemble (Honors)
Wind Ensemble provides the instrumental musician with the opportunity to study and perform advanced wind band literature. Membership is by audition only. Private instruction is encouraged; formal concert attire is required. Students perform in evening concerts and competitive festivals, as well as in marching band and pep band activities. Participation at scheduled performances and occasional after school rehearsals is a required portion of the grading procedure. Members of Wind Ensemble also participate in a biannual trip. Students who participate in the OMEA District 14 Solo & Ensemble Contest receive Honors credit. This course may be repeated for credit.
Symphonic Band
Symphonic Band continues the individual musical training necessary to play a wind instrument or percussion, including basic music theory, rhythmic development, and instrument-specific technique. Private instruction is encouraged. Concert attire is required. Students perform in evening concerts and festivals, as well as in marching band and pep band activities. These performances are a required portion of the grading procedure. Members of Symphonic Band may also participate in the OMEA District 14 Solo & Ensemble Contest. This course may be repeated for credit.
Concert Band
Concert Band emphasizes the continuing musical training necessary to play a wind instrument or percussion, including basic music theory, rhythmic development, and instrument-specific technique. Private instruction is encouraged. Concert attire is required. Students perform in evening concerts and festivals, as well as in marching band and pep band activities. These performances are a required portion of the grading procedure. Members of Concert Band may also participate in the OMEA District 14 Solo & Ensemble Contest. (Concert Band will not be offered for the 2009-2010 school year.)
Orchestra (Honors)
Orchestra emphasizes the continuing musical training necessary to play a string instrument, including basic music theory, rhythmic development, and instrument-specific technique. Private instruction is encouraged. Formal concert attire is required. Students will study and perform a variety of repertoire from the baroque, classical, romantic, and contemporary eras. Participation at scheduled performances and occasional before school rehearsals is a required portion of the grading procedure. Members of Orchestra also participate in a biannual trip. Students who participate in the OMEA District 14 Solo & Ensemble Contest receive Honors credit. This course may be repeated for credit.
Jazz Ensemble (Honors)
Jazz Ensemble focuses on the study, preparation, and performance of advanced jazz literature. A high level of proficiency on a standard jazz instrument is required. Membership is by audition only. Private instruction is encouraged; formal concert attire is required. All members (except guitarists and pianists) are required to be enrolled in another band or orchestra class the entire year. Class size is limited to instrumentation needs. Participation is required at evening concerts, jazz festivals, and community events scheduled throughout the year. Members of Jazz Ensemble also participate in a biannual trip. This course may be repeated for credit. (Jazz will not be offered at Tualatin High School for the 2009-2010 school year.)
Jazz Lab
Jazz Lab provides an opportunity for students to study and perform music in the instrumental jazz idiom. Students learn jazz terminology, a variety of jazz styles, and basic improvisation techniques. Private instruction is encouraged. Concert attire is required. All members (except guitarists and pianists) are required to be enrolled in another band or orchestra class the entire year. Participation is required at evening concerts, jazz festivals, and community events scheduled throughout the year. This course may be repeated for credit. (Jazz will not be offered at Tualatin High School for the 2009-2010 school year.)
Music Theory (Honors)
This course teaches the fundamentals of music theory, including melody, harmony, rhythm, meter, scales and modes, chord structure and analysis, texture, form, orchestration, and composition in Western (European) music. Historical examples will be used to illustrate exemplary implementation of theory concepts. Successful completion of this course will prepare students to sit for the AP Music Theory Exam. This course is also the prerequisite for IB Music History. IB diploma candidates planning to study music as their Group 6 elective must complete both courses. Miusic Theory, however, is open to all music students, not just IB or AP students. (Music Theory will not be offered for the 2009-2010 school year.)
