Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need two years of a Second Language (Foreign Language) to graduate?
Students do not need a second language to graduate from high school, but most colleges require a minimum of 2 years of the same second language for college admission.

Why is Forecasting in March so important for my schedule?
Forecasting choices and the number of students who request a class actually help to determine what courses will be offered and the number of sections that will be available. The more accurately you forecast, the better schedule you will have the following year.

Can I change teachers if I do not like someone I was assigned to?
No. Students need to keep the schedule that they are given and attend those classes. We do not have adequate staff to meet the requests for teacher changes.

What about the PSAT test?
The PSAT is only given one time in October. You can register for the test with the TuHS bookkeeper. The test was written for high school juniors, but advanced sophomores and freshman are encouraged to take this test as well.

Senior Section:

How do I get letters of recommendation?
Students are encouraged to ask Counselors and Teachers early for letters. Please give at least two weeks notice to a Counselor or Teacher when asking for a letter of recommendation. Recommendation forms are available in the Counseling Office and are an easy way to make sure you provide all the information needed for a good letter of recommendation.

How do I get admission applications from Colleges?
You can download admission applications from the colleges you want to apply to. Start with www.collegeboard.com or www.princetonreview.com. Students need to make sure to meet admission deadlines! The admission application will indicate when it is due. If you have questions bring the admission application to your Counselor and they can help you.

What is a CEEB code?
The CEEB code identifies students with their high school. The code for Tualatin High School is 381163. SAT and ACT ask for this code in order for your test scores to be sent to the high school you attend.

How do I request Transcripts for admission applications, scholarships etc.?
Students sign up for transcripts with Mrs. Hurlbutt in the Counseling Office. Students need to indicate if the transcript needs to be official or unofficial and if they need test scores attached with the transcript.
The first three transcripts are free; additional copies are $3.00.  Transcripts are generally available for pick up in the counseling office within 48 hours of the written request.  Students are responsible for mailing.

How do I register for SAT I, SAT II or ACT tests?
Students access collegeboard.com to register for SAT and SAT II tests. To register for the ACT, students access ACT.org. There is no limit on the number of times students can take ACT or SAT tests. Consult the web sites for more information.
*SAT II tests are subject area tests—some colleges require SAT II tests as part of the admission process. To know if a college requires the test, look at the college admission criteria. If you have further questions, you can ask your Counselor.

How do I find scholarship information?
Buyer beware—please do not pay for scholarship information. Most groups that ask you to pay for scholarships are frauds. If you have questions, please see your Counselor. You can register for scholarship information on Fastweb.com. Another great place for scholarships is in the Counseling Office at Tualatin High School. Parents and students can access the Tualatin High School web site for scholarship information. Scholarship applications and compilation lists are filed for students and/or parents to pick up in the Counseling Office starting in October.
